Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy president of the Nigerian senate, his wife Beatrice, and the physician Obinna Obeta are scheduled to be sentenced in a UK court today, Friday, May 5, 2023, following their March convictions for organ trafficking.
The trio could spend up to 10 years in jail for breaking the Modern Slavery Act; this is the first conviction under the Act.
A UK court declared the trio guilty of trafficking in organs. The jury concluded that they planned to lure the victim to London so they could take advantage of him for his kidney.
Following a six-week trial at London’s Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, they were found guilty of conspiring to set up the travel of a young Nigerian man named David Nwamini to the UK with the intention of abusing him for his kidney. Their conviction followed the trial. The organ was required for Sonia, Ekweremadu’s ailing daughter.
Hugh Davies, the prosecutor, alleged during the trial that Ekweremadu shown “entitlement, dishonesty, and hypocrisy.”
Ekweremadu and his wife, on the other hand, denied being involved in the scheme and said they had been duped. Obeta also refuted the accusation, claiming that Nwamini was acting benevolently and had not been promised payment in exchange for his kidney.
