Argentina beat France 4 – 2 on penalties to clinch FIFA world cup final

After a thrilling 3-3 stalemate in the World Cup final at the Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar, Argentina defeated France on penalties to win the tournament in 2022.

With a penalty kick in the 23rd minute from Lionel Messi, Argentina seemed increasingly likely to win easily. Soon after, colleague and unexpected starter Angel Di Maria doubled their lead.

However, France, who didn’t fire a shot until the 71st minute, came alive in the closing stages and were rewarded when replacement Randal Kolo Muani won a penalty with just over 10 minutes left, which Mbappe converted.

Almost soon after, Mbappe made another appearance when France regained possession of the ball at the halfway point. Mbappe was then provided with a floated pass on the edge of the box, and he volleyed it into the bottom right corner to force extra time.

When Mbappe converted a penalty after Gonzalo Montiel was fouled, France tied the score, forcing a shootout. Argentina thought they had won in extra time when Messi pounced to slot home a parry from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, but France equalized again before time was out.

Mbappe and Messi scored the first two penalties for France, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez stopped Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni’s subsequent two attempts. Montiel then stepped up and scored to help Argentina win 4-2 on penalties.
