The Big Brother Housemates were completely cut off from the outside world throughout their time in the house – no social media, no email, and the few messages from friends and family that they were allowed to see were carefully screened by Big Brother to ensure that they didn’t reveal anything. As a result, none of them knew what their supporters thought of them, how the vote results turned out, or how popular they were.

But, come on, those of us who were paying attention to the thousands of social media posts, fan accounts, and general chatter about what was going on inside the House would have predicted at least some of the Top 6 finalists early on. Liquorose, Pere, and Whitemoney were all early competitors for the top three slots, but they approached it in quite different ways.

By now, everyone knows that Whitemoney won the Shine Ya Eye season, and his followers have been crowing ever since, while the other Housemates’ supporters have been eating crow. The question is, how did Whitemoney end up here in the first place? What made him a front-runner for the Grand Prize even very early in the show?

Relax and enjoy yourself.

Whitemoney was, without a doubt, the most laid-back of the Housemates: he wasn’t a pushover, but he rarely got involved in major brawls — unless the kitchen supplies were being abused. When the other Housemates were in a fight, Whitemoney nearly never took sides, instead offering his (good or bad) advise to the parties involved. In a game where making the greatest noise is often rewarded, Whitemoney has proved that keeping it cool may be just as beneficial.

Take it easy on yourself!

Okay, we’ve discussed his laid-back approach to confrontation, but we also need to discuss his almost horizontal approach to physical activity. This is where morning exercise sessions come to mind. While the other Housemates grunted, squatted, puffed, and sweated, Whitemoney lay on his exercise mat, staring at them as if they were insane. When he did choose to exercise a muscle in conjunction with the others, he would do so only to the bare minimum — and sometimes even less. Clearly, physical fitness is for other individuals.

Make a contribution

Okay, the jury is still out on whether Whitemoney’s self-appointment as chef-in-residence was a calculated move, but if it was, it paid off. And if it wasn’t, it still worked. Pere utilized his position as Head of House to keep Whitemoney out of the kitchen because he recognized the threat: someone who is indispensable and always in everyone’s good graces is unlikely to appear on the Nomination lists, putting everyone else at risk. Pere’s strategy was probably spot on.

He did, however, fail to adequately prepare for the relocation. Food shortages, fighting, and hatred toward Pere’s leadership style, which became increasingly heavy-handed as  time passed, almost immediately followed Whitemoney’s absence from the kitchen. While the tide went against him, he battled to maintain an appearance of power. In the end, his plan backfired catastrophically, and Whitemoney was reinstated as Kitchen Guy, a position that was never challenged again. As a result, Whitemoney became a household name.

This was not lost on the viewers of Big Brother. We’d all seen Pere’s attempt to sway the game in his favor, and we’d all seen it fail. While Pere’s popularity among fans grew, his early own goal – and Whitemoney’s – would never have been far from his mind. His persistent survival of many Nominations would have given him some confidence that the viewers were on his side.

Be modest.

And if you can’t be humble, learn to act humble. After surviving his first Live Eviction Show, Whitemoney’s thankfulness was evident, and it transferred into viewers’ support, who viewed it as proof that he wasn’t your usual arrogant, too-cool-for-school competitor. In a similar vein, Whitemoney frequently stated that his experience in the House taught him a lot about himself and the kind of person he wanted to be — another indication of humility that connected with the electorate.

Be funny.

Whitemoney has a good sense of humour, both about himself and people around him. Even when an audience expects a no-holds-barred combat, his regular joking around made for entertaining viewing. Being able to make jokes with everyone and it made some of the interactions in the House that much more enjoyable.

Don’t get too worked up about minor details.

Let’s just say Whitemoney had no chance at the Head of House Games. Sure, he won it once, but that was purely by chance. He never ran fast enough to break a sweat and would even halt if he rolled a “restart” or something similar. He simply did not believe that the position of Head of House was worth dying for. Which is odd, given the post comes with immunity – he just didn’t think it was a big deal, and it obviously wasn’t for him. He made it through every single one of his nominations and continued on to Grand Finale.

Because of Whitemoney’s unique approach to the Shine Ya Eye Season, he was declared the winner.  but for now, all we can say is “well done, Igbo Kid!”
