Cameroon into inter-continental playoffs for World Cup

After edging Botswana 1-0 in their repechage match at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat on Sunday, Cameroon has guaranteed their spot in the inter-continental playoffs for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup.

The game’s lone goal was scored by the great Ajara Njoya in the first half, and Cameroon was mostly in control, but they did finish with 10 players due to a late red card.

They will compete for one of the three remaining slots at the finals at the 10-team global playoffs in New Zealand in February, along with Senegal.

The African team will compete alongside Taiwan, Thailand, Haiti, and Panama in that competition.

Senegal accomplished this on Sunday during a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations repechage game when they overcame Tunisia on penalties.

Njoya had a pregame strategy in place to test The Mares stopper from a distance, and it paid off as she forced a superb save from Botswana goalie Maitumelo Boseja.

Soon after, she gave it another shot that was easier for Boseja before finally succeeding the third time around just before halftime.

Another 30-yard effort from Njoya found the bottom corner of the net after receiving a tiny deflection from a defender.

Despite having a decent share of the ball in the first half, Botswana did not do anything offensively.

Njoya broke into the box on the right side and forced the goalie to make another fantastic save early in the second half, turning the match into a one-on-one contest between the two players.

Refilwe Tholakele caused Ange Bawou, the goalkeeper for Cameroon, to make a fine save, and since the ball dropped to the top of the crossbar as a result, Botswana had a rare opportunity to score.

With six minutes left in the game, Cameroon was down to 10 players when substitute Fadimatou Aretouyap was sent off for a stamp.
