At the FIFA awards event in Paris on Monday, Lionel Messi won the Best FIFA Men’s Player award, defeating Karim Benzema of Real Madrid and teammate Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi’s pursuit for the one major honor that had eluded him throughout his career came to an end in December when Argentina won the 2022 World Cup, the nation’s first in 36 years.
Messi won his second FIFA The Best trophy on Monday after winning it for the first time in 2019. In addition, he has a record seven Ballon d’Or victories.
Messi finished one goal behind Mbappe for the Golden Boot at the World Cup in Qatar with seven goals, including a brace in the exciting 3-3 penalty shootout victory.
In 27 appearances in all competitions this season, Messi has tallied 16 goals and 14 assists as he pursues PSG’s second Ligue 1 championship in two years.
Lionel Messi received congratulations from Barcelona president Joan Laporta for winning. Laporta tweeted the following after Barca congratulated their club’s all-time leading scorer on his most recent individual trophy: “Best wishes, Leo Messi! A renowned career has received fresh and well-deserved praise. We Culers are honored that you are a part of our history, and we will always be.”
Among the other female winners, Sarina Wiegman of England’s Dutch coaching staff won the award for best coach, while Mary Earps was chosen keeper of the year.
Marcin Oleksy, a Polish amputee, scored an amazing acrobatic volley with Warta Poznan against Stal Rzeszow to win the Puskas award for best goal of the year.
