Fatima Tagnaout, the Morocco firebrand lighting up the host nation at WAFCON

Fatima Tagnaout, the Morocco firebrand whose performances are lighting up a nation

Fatima Tagnaout is the “mad fire” of Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, standing out on the field with her striking silver braids and unmistakable speed, passion, and dribbling ability.

Following Morocco’s qualification for their first FIFA Women’s World Cup and their ascent to the tournament’s quarterfinals with a passionate home audience right behind them, Tagnaout is walking on air like her teammates.

Hay Nassim in Casablanca was identified at an early age while playing football in her neighborhood. She applied for trials at Morocco’s premier team ASFAR and hasn’t looked back since.

After joining ASFAR, Tagnaout went on to become one of the military club’s most accomplished players, taking home six Throne Cups and seven league championships.

She was once again voted Woman of the Encounter after a solid performance in Morocco’s last group match against Senegal. She has been having a strong tournament for the hosts.

With World Cup qualification already secured, Tagnaout has larger aspirations.

Her and her teammates’ objective is to take home the WAFCON championship.

They will be underdogs against the skilled Nigerian masters, but with their “crazy fire” and the loud, ebullient support of their home crowd, they stand a good chance of extending their fairytale.
