The fantasy run of the African team in Qatar came to an end on Wednesday night when France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the World Cup semifinals at the Al Bayt Stadium.
Theo Hernandez’s early goal and Randal Kolo Muani’s late tap-in gave reigning champions France a tough victory over a Morocco team that made African World Cup history at the 2022 competition.
Argentina, which defeated Croatia on Tuesday with a score of 3-0, will now play Didier Deschamps’ team in the World Cup final, marking the first meeting between the two heavyweights.
Within five minutes, France put an end to any chance of a second Moroccan miracle when Theo Hernandez met a ball that had fallen to him at the back post and volleyed it past Yassine Bounou.
Despite giving up early, Morocco took control of the game and consistently pressured France near the conclusion of the second half. Jawad El Yamiq’s audacious overhead kick forced Hugo Lloris to make one of many saves in the first half.
After the break, Morocco came out strong and Yahya Attiat-Allah missed a great chance to equalize as they spent a large portion of the opening 10 minutes of the second half on France’s defensive end of the field.
The PSG star’s half-shot dribbled toward the goal, and Kolo Muani pounced to double the lead and secure a return for Les Bleus to the final after Kylian Mbappe’s frantic run through confined space in the Moroccan penalty area.
The Atlas Lions of Morocco were coached by Walid Regragui, who oversaw a group-winning campaign, a round-of-16 triumph over Spain, and a victory against Portugal that made them the first African team to advance to the semifinals before falling to France.
