Reps step down same sex marriage amendment bill.

The second reading of the same sex act amendment was withdrawn by the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The change happened soon after a contentious discussion that was largely against the bill.

The bill’s sponsor, Muda Lawal Umar, criticized the concept of same-sex marriage in the main argument, claiming it was foreign to Nigeria and that it led to the idea of cross-dressing.

The Second Reading of a Bill to Amend the 2013 Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act to Prohibit Cross Dressing and Other Matters was aborted by the House.

But as soon as he began to read the law’s specifics, the deputy speaker, Wase, encouraged the sponsor to drop the bill and asked him to first learn about Nigerian culture.

“I believe you need to put in more effort. Recognize the diversity and uniqueness in this nation. I think you should step down this bill for further instructions,” he said, mandating the bill’s stepping down.
