Super Falcons See Off Indomitable Lioness to Reach WAFCON Semi Final and 2023 FIFA Women world Cup

Nigeria defeated Cameroon 1-0 on Thursday at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca, continuing their streak of qualifying for every Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons won their quarterfinal match at the tournament in Morocco with a close margin thanks to a header from Rasheedat Ajibade in the 56th minute.

Each of the final eight games becomes a virtual final because the top four finishers at Wafcon advance to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand the following year.

Following a bloody altercation with one of their neighbors, Nigeria joined Morocco, Zambia, and them on Thursday. The Super Falcons will make their ninth appearance in the Women’s World Cup finals.

Due to the outcome, Cameroon will have to compete in a relegation game on Sunday in an effort to get to the World Cup playoff event in New Zealand, where two additional African teams will have the opportunity to advance to the championships Down Under in June.

In a contest between the top two women’s teams on the continent, Cameroon, who has competed in the last two World Cups, more than met their equal in the defending African champions.

After a powerful run by Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene and a cross from Ifeoa Onumonu that found the blue-haired winger at the back post, Ajibade’s goal was scored. The lone on-target shot in the contest was Ajibade’s effort, which deflected off the post.

There wasn’t much to distinguish between the two teams, who put up the tournament’s most intensely physical match to date.

While Cameroon must play Botswana in the playoffs for fifth to eighth place, Nigeria will now play Morocco in the Wafcon semifinals the following week.

The Indomitable Lionesses, who were playing without important midfielders Monique Ngock and Jeannette Yango due to suspension, had only let up one goal all tournament long up until Thursday, despite coming second in their group in the first round. They also held Nigeria at bay with strong defense.

The captain of Cameroon, Gabriele Aboudi Onguene, had two chances to give her team a chance to win either side of the halftime, but she pulled both attempts wide.

When tall English-born defender Ashleigh Plumptre got two consecutive headers before the Cameroon goalkeeper grabbed the ball out of the air in the 24th minute, Nigeria might have taken the lead.

South Africa and Tunisia play each other later on Thursday in Rabat to determine the final spot in the World Cup.
